“Twas the Night Before Surgery at the Hospital…Common Questions Patients Ask Before Surgery at the Hospital

So you are having out patient surgery with Dr. Silvester at the hospital. Here are a few common questions that patients have before surgery.

Q: Can I take my medication the morning of surgery?

A: You may take your Blood Pressure medication the morning of surgery, however everything else you can take after your procedure. (If you take diabetic medication at night it is ok to take them the night prior to surgery.)

Q: What do I wear to the hospital?

A: You may wear loose clothing to and from the hospital since you may have a bulky dressing. Once at the hospital, you will need to change into a surgical gown.

Q: Can I drive myself home or do I need someone to go with me?

A: Someone will need to come with you and drive you home. 

Q: Will I be asleep during surgery?

A: At the hospital, the anesthesiologist will give you medication thru an IV to make you fall asleep 

Q: Do I take my antibiotic and pain medication the morning of surgery?

A: You will start your 2 prescriptions after the surgery.

Q: Can I eat or drink something the morning of surgery?

A: No, please do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to surgery

Q: How long will I be there at the hospital?A: If you are scheduled for surgery at the hospital you will more than likely be there around 4 hours, their policy is to have you there 1-hour before and keep you about 1 hour after. 

Q: When can I change my dressings?

A: We will do your dressing changes at the Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic. If you feel like your dressing is too tight or has bled through just give us a call and we will bring you in to have that changed.
