Home Care for Bunion Pain

Don’t let bunion pain get in your way if you are going to start an exercise routine in 2015! This time of year just about everyone is making resolutions for a healthier lifestyle and we want to see you stick to your commitments. When you experience toe pain, though, it can throw a wrench into your plans and lead to discouragement that you simply do not need. Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic wants to help if we can, so here are some tips for dealing with bunions at home.

Wearing comfortable shoes that offer plenty of room in the toe box area will not only help provide relief from bunion pain, it may even prevent bunions from happening in the first place. They can develop when tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes apply too much pressure on the big toe joint.

When running or walking cause too much pain as a result of a bunion, switch to a different type of exercise, like swimming or bicycling. These activities will allow you to get exercise and improve your physical conditioning, but without irritating your bunion.

In order to relieve the pain that comes from bunions, ice can be an effective treatment. Use an ice pack or ice wrapped in a towel two or three times a day for 10-15 minutes to reduce swelling that accompanies an inflamed and painful bunion.

Bunion pads, arch supports, and prescription orthotics can be used to redistribute bodyweight and take pressure off your big toe. Dr. Darren Silvester can help you choose pads that will work, or fit you for customized orthotics that can help treat the condition.

When you have a painful big toe because of a bunion, your best course of action is to contact the experts at Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic and receive the specialized care and treatment that you need.
