Find the Right Shoes for Overpronation

Walking is great exercise. It improves circulation, strengthens your lower limbs, and generally benefits your health. Walking is more fun, of course, if you’re walking somewhere interesting, like the Pleasanton Second Saturday Artwalk. It’s an opportunity to enjoy home crafts, music, and beautiful art in the downtown area on the second Saturday of every month. Of course, if you have flat feet, you need to make an effort to find the right shoes for overpronation to head off pain in your feet.

Overpronation is the problem of your foot rolling inward excessively when you strike and push off the ground. This puts extra strain on the arch and inner side of the foot. It also destabilizes your lower limbs, forcing the leg to overcompensate. After a while, you may develop arch, knee, and even hip difficulties.

Your shoes need to accommodate your feet by bolstering your arch and controlling abnormal motion in your hindfoot. This will mean looking for footwear that offers a lot of cushioning, structure, and arch support. Make sure your footwear has a solid heel cup and grip. You should avoid barely-there sandals, flats, or minimalist shoes as well as heels. Because these do not stabilize you, your feet will simply continue to roll inward and cause you trouble.

You may still need orthotics if your shoes are not able to provide you with the support you need. Dr. Darren Silvester at Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic will be able to help you determine if shoes are enough or if you’ll need additional stabilization.

Don’t just guess which styles are the right shoes for overpronation. Figure out what you’ll need beforehand, so you don’t waste time and money choosing footwear that will be bad for your feet. Let Dr. Darren Silvester and our team here at Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic in Pleasanton, TX, help you figure out what shoes will be best for you.
