Next Step Foot and Ankle Clinic’s Case of the Month: Flat Feet
“Hi, this is Dr. Silvester, and I want to talk to you today about a case that came to see us that illustrates what we can do to help people with flat feet. We had a young man, about twelve years old, who came to see me with fairly severe flat feet. He couldn’t enjoy going to Sea World, had difficulty going to school, and was just miserable any time he had to be on his feet, because they were so flat and collapsed, that he just couldn’t function very well.
He came to see us and was a remarkable young man. He decided to have the surgery, his family wanted him to do it. He went through a couple procedures that are based on the deformity that he had, and subsequently, we saw him for his final visit last week, he’s doing extremely well. He’s very functional, walking, and doing well.
We have some before and after x-rays I want to show you. This is his foot beforehand:
You can see that the foot is really twisted to the outside. It’s also dislocated back at the base of the foot, where the rearfoot connects to the forefoot. With a couple of procedures that addressed those deformities, here’s his foot now:
That’s the foot after the surgery, and this is the foot before the surgery.
You can kind of get an idea of what’s possible with surgical correction of flat feet. If you know someone who is suffering from flatfoot conditions and they’re having difficulty getting around or keeping up with their peers, give us a call here at the Next Step Foot and Ankle Clinic, and we’ll see if we can’t give them a hand too. Thanks for listening!”
