Fall Prevention – Improve Balance & Stability with a Balance Device
At the Next Step Foot & Ankle Clinic, we offer a Fall Risk Assessment that as part of our comprehensive Neuropathy Examination. We do this assessment for people who have a history of balance problems, or who are not able to feel their feet as well as they would like. The assessment determines if a brace can dramatically increase the stability in the patient, so that when they’re walking they’re not at such a great risk of falls.
What is a Moore Balance Brace?
Dr. Silvester recommends the Moore Balance Brace. The device comes up the leg a little ways and goes down inside the shoe, and it provides the ankle with added support. It also provides proprioception, which means the ability to feel your foot in space so that you know where your foot is. The Moore Balance Brace helps people that have a little foot drag, what we call “drop foot”. It helps eliminate drag so that when they go through the swing phase of gait, their toes can clear obstacles.
How effective is a Moore Balance Brace?
The Moore Balance Brace has been shown to be quite effective at lowering the risk of falls. An independent study shows balance improvements with the Moore Balance Brace.
